Is Terminator: Dark Fate Wrapping Up Sarah Connor's Story For Good?

While she hasnt been present for every Terminator movie, theres no arguing that without Sarah Connor, the sci-fi saga wouldnt exist. So it was good to hear that she would be back for Terminator 6, currently known as Terminator: Dark Fate, this time with Linda Hamilton reprising the role nearly 30 years after Terminator 2: Judgement Day. No one blinks an eye anymore at seeing Arnold Schwarzenegger returning to play a T-800/850 model anymore, but the fact that Dark Fate director Tim Miller and producer James Cameron managed to convince Hamilton to return to this world is impressive. It also makes me wonder if Dark Fate will turn a new chapter in the Terminator franchise by wrapping up Sarahs story. For real this time!

I dont need to remind any of you that Sarah Connor was one of the main human protagonists of the first two Terminator movies. The Terminator saw her being shaken out of her idyllic life when she was targeted by a T-800, and Terminator 2 showed her 11 years later as a hardened warrior obsessed with Judgement Day and determined to keep herself and her John safe. And then came Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, where it was revealed that Sarah had died of leukemia in 1997, though shed lived long enough to see Judgement Day come and go without any mass annihilation. Not that it mattered, since in this timeline, Judgement Day was merely postponed and came to pass in 2004 instead.

It should be noted that Linda Hamilton was approached to reprise Sarah Connor in Terminator 3, but she turned down the opportunity because she felt her role in the movie was kind of disposable. So killing Sarah Connor off-screen was definitely anti-climactic and the character deserved something better, but it just couldnt be helped. Hamilton did make a vocal cameo as Sarah in Terminator Salvation, but once Terminator Genisys rolled around in 2015, Emilia Clarke inherited the role. That movie took a 2009 Star Trek-like approach with rebooting the Terminator continuity, including having Sarah already being a formidable warrior by the time Kyle Reese travels back in time to protect her. Alas, because Genisys was met with mostly negative reception, we wont be seeing any more of this Terminator timeline.

(Id be remiss if I didnt also note that future Game of Thrones star Lena Heady played Sarah Connor in the short-lived Fox TV series Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, but for the purposes of this feature, were only focusing on the Terminator movies.)

Which brings us to Terminator: Dark Fate, which is serving as a sequel to the first two Terminator movies and ignoring all the subsequent entries. In other words, Sarahs dying of cancer is no longer canon in this continuity, and Linda Hamiltons version of the character is still kicking. Clearly if Hamilton was willing to return for Dark Fate, she approved of the material James Cameron and Tim Miller pitched her much more than what she was given for Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. No specific plot details have been revealed for Dark Fate yet, but considering that Cameron said back in 2017 that this latest Terminator movie is intended to be the start of a new trilogy that would pass the baton, I cant help feeling like the reason Hamilton agreed to return to the franchise was because she was promised that Sarah could make a grand exit that actually does the character justice. Her leaving paves the way for a new generation.

Perhaps Linda Hamilton returning for Terminator: Dark Fate is a situation similar to how Harrison Ford was willing to reprise Han Solo in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. In the decades after Return of the Jedi came out, Ford was open about how he wished Han had died in the original Star Wars trilogy capper, and then The Force Awakens comes along granting his wish. What if Hamilton received similar assurances about Dark Fate? That Sarah will also die, but as opposed to it happening offscreen again, shed be given the heros death that she deserves. Thatd certainly be big incentive to return to a character you havent played in nearly 30 years.

Judging by that Terminator: Dark Fate photo thats been released, clearly Sarah Connor is still quite the badass nearly decades after the events of Terminator 2. One can presume then that shell see at least a little action in Dark Fate, so its easy enough to imagine a scenario where she dies in battle. And, as mentioned earlier, her death makes room for the new Terminator characters, like Mackenzie Davis Grace and Natalia Reyes Dani Ramos, to take over as the new main characters of this franchise.

Its also worth mentioning that it doesnt look like John Connor will have a major role in Terminator: Dark Fate. His adolescent self will appear in some capacity, with Edward Furlongs likeness being placed via CGI over body double Jude Collie, but theres no word about an adult John appearing. Assuming Dark Fate takes place in 2019, then John should be leading the Resistance against Skynet by this point, but then again, we dont know how events in this particular Terminator timeline have unfolded. Maybe John died as a child, and when Skynet eventually rose to power, whenever that was, Sarah was forced to take over as The Resistance figurehead. If thats the case, then that could further validate the idea that Sarah could meet her demise fighting the new threat thats surfaced in Dark Fate, leaving her role as Resistance leader to be taken over by another.

Its no secret that the Terminator franchise has seen better days, so bringing back Linda Hamilton could be a good way for Terminator: Dark Fate to partially recapture that magic from the first two Terminator movies. However, we have no idea yet how big her role will be, and if this indeed is a transitory moment for the franchise, then perhaps Dark Fate will bid adieu to the old guard. If this is the last time we see Sarah in a Terminator movie, fingers crossed that her return and final moments are anywhere near as memorable and iconic as shes been for the sci-fi and action genres.

Here's Robert Downey Jr. Teasing 'Endgame' During Press For Avengers: Age Of Ultron

After the ending of Avengers: Infinity War shook fans to the core, theories upon theories for the upcoming follow-up have run rampant, especially regarding the fourth Avengers installment's title.

When it was recently announced that it will be called Avengers: Endgame, many instantly found its roots in a quote from Doctor Strange in Infinity War when he hands over the Time Stone to Thanos to save Tony's life and declares "we're in endgame now."

"Endgame" however has been uttered before in regards to the MCU, even dating back to a quote Robert Downey Jr. said whilst doing press for Avengers: Age of Ultron. Check out the clip shared by Twitter user @ImAFilmEditor:

Hmm... makes you think that maybe there's a larger plan at play here, doesn't it? In the clip, Robert Downey Jr. is referring to the plot of the second Avengers flick Age of Ultron, in which Tony and Bruce secretly work on a global defense program called "Ultron" using the artificial intelligence in the scepter containing the Mind Stone. The "Ultron" project of course goes terribly wrong when it becomes the main villain of the film.

These words said by Robert Downey Jr. are also in reference to something his character says in Age of Ultron in a scene where the Avengers learn of Ultron's existence and start pointing fingers at Tony and Bruce for messing with the technology. Tony defends himself by explaining that they were trying to create something that could stand against the alien threats that have tried them before. In Tony Stark's words:

Anybody remember when I carried a nuke through a wormhole, saved New York, recall that? A hostile alien army came charging through a hole in space, we're standing 300 feet below it. We're the Avengers, we can bust arms dealers all the live long day, but that up there, that's the endgame. How are you guys planning on beating that?

And then Captain America chimes in and says "together" to mush up the scene a bit and the Avengers go out to fight Ultron. While it could be purely a coincidence that the word "endgame" was said prior to Infinity War too, it could also be some sort of hint into where the fourth Avengers film is going.

As referenced in both RDJ's words and his lines in Age of Ultron, Tony Stark knows and is fearful of a more aggressive threat than the one that opened a wormhole in New York City in the 2012 film, and he doesn't know how they can be prepared. He tried to create something that can replace the heroes so they don't have to come against it, but it too fails, leaving things to the Avengers.

In the Age of Ultron conversation, Cap and Tony go head-to-head in disagreement as Captain America asserts that it doesn't matter what happens, as long as they fight, and maybe die together, that's enough.

Since the core of the franchise has been tied to Iron Man and Captain America's relationship and differing ideals, and many believe that the pair will not return to the MCU after Endgame, I can't help but think that maybe those words really do date farther back in meaning than Infinity War.

All will be revealed when Avengers: Endgame comes to theaters on April 26, 2019.

You Know, Mr. Incredible Isn't That Good Of A Superhero

Throughout both The Incredibles and Incredibles 2, we've followed the adventures of the Parr family and their super-powered antics in a world where heroes are illegal. In the world of the films, Mr. Incredible has always been a big deal, with Incredibles 2 making a point to draw the comedy out of the fact that his storied crime-fighting career doesn't mean he's the best hope for legalizing superheroes once again. But after seeing the film a second time, a question burrowed its way into my mind, undermining all of my previous thoughts: is Mr. Incredible really that good of a superhero to begin with? After some thought, and careful consideration, I have to say that no, he really isn't.

I don't mean to knock Bob Parr or his Incredible alter ego, but take a look at the stats from the moments we've seen in his career. For starters, Winston and Evelyn Deavor's risk analysis portfolio only confirmed something we saw in The Incredibles and its sequel: wherever Mr. Incredible goes, mass property destruction follows. Now that's fine when you're fighting an Omnidroid on a tropical island that doesn't happen to be inhabited by a town the size of Municiberg or Metroville; but when you're in two towns that happen to have monorail service, and you've destroyed at least part of both, your record isn't exactly the best when it comes to saving the day.

Not to mention, while Bob's strength is still his best asset, Mr. Incredible has another nasty habit: his major villains always seem to get away in the opening of an Incredibles film. Both Bomb Voyage and The Underminer are still on the loose, free to commit as much wanton destruction and thievery as they please. With Bomb Voyage, there's obviously the excuse of Buddy, aka Syndrome, being a distraction at the worst time possible, so that's a slight bit of slack. But with The Underminer, Bob was so clumsy he got sucked into The Underminer's vehicle, and in the process of brawling with his nemesis, he smashes the controls that could have stopped the drill from penetrating through valuable city infrastructure.

The truth is, in the world of The Incredibles, Elastigirl actually is the better hero. Between being a certified pilot -- which has helped her survive two high-flying attempts on her life and the lives of those around her -- and an amazingly adept problem solver, she's like the Sherlock Holmes of the Incredibles universe. Taking both films as a mirror image of the same plot, Elastigirl figures out the villain's plot by asking the right questions; while Mr. Incredible only stumbles onto Syndrome's evil plans after he's successfully lured into an attempt on his life, endangering his family in the process.

Again, I don't want to draw all of the credit away from Robert Parr's super abilities. The man is pretty damned strong, and in the confines of a super team like that of his family unit in Incredibles 2, he's a valuable asset. Not to mention, as a character, seeing the Bob we knew from The Incredibles progress into an even more loving and supportive father, while also nurturing his kid's own powers, is something beautiful to behold. Hell, he even figured out New Math once he really put his mind to it, so clearly, he's not totally useless!
