Why Damien Chazelle Believes First Mans Bracelet On The Moon Scene To Be True

SPOILER WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for First Man. If you have not yet seen the film, please read on at your own risk!While Ryan Gosling's Neil Armstrong remains a stoic figure throughout most of Damien Chazelle's First Man, never seeming to fully process the death of his daughter as he enters the space program, he succeeds in having a big emotional moment shortly after he lands on the moon. It's revealed in the film that he brought a bracelet belonging to his daughter in the shuttle with him, and he leaves it in a crater on the moon in her memory.

It's been one of the most talked about moments in the film, partially because it's unclear if it's the portrayal of a real event or a creation for the movie -- but in the mind of Damien Chazelle, the scene we see depicted in First Man is what Neil Armstrong really did during his moonwalk:

I think it's true, but no one knows for sure. We know that he brought... well, we know that he went off to a crater for 10 minutes and stood by himself, and didn't tell anyone what he did, and no one knows what he did. It was off camera and whatnot. And he refused to disclose his flight manifest, which would say what he brought to the moon. And we also know that many astronauts in the lunar programs brought mementos of loved ones to leave - either dead loved ones are still living.

With First Man both being a contender in this year's awards race, and soon arriving on home video, I had the immense pleasure of sitting down with both Damien Chazelle and Claire Foy this past weekend to discuss their collaboration. The primary subject of the conversation was the emotional fortitude displayed by Neil Armstrong during the years the movie depicts, and it naturally led talking about the bracelet scene.

While I admittedly was under the impression that it was fictionalized, the director offered up some interesting evidence suggesting that the bracelet scene could have happened as depicted. He freely admits that it's not something that can ever really be verified, since Neil Armstrong never spoke about it before his death in 2012, but there are enough puzzle pieces -- or, weirdly, lack thereof -- to start putting together a picture.

The idea of Neil Armstrong leaving his daughter's bracelet on the moon originated in James Hansen's biography, First Man: The Life of Neil A. Armstrong, which screenwriter Josh Singer adapted in the making of the film. But even while he never got a 100% straight answer in regards to the matter, Damien Chazelle stills finds that this version of the story speaks very much to Armstrong's personality. Continuing, he explained,

That's where Jim Hansen, the biographer, got the idea. Did he go to the crater to leave something behind? And he talked with Neil's sister, June, who said she didn't know for sure, but she thought he did or she liked to think he did. So we did that, but in a way, I think it was not just the idea of that moment that I found beautiful, but also just the fact, of course, if it did happen, that he never talked about it. That's just typical Neil.

Because First Man is a feature film and not a documentary, it arguably has the license to weigh factual truth and emotional truth as it sees fit, and even if it's not entirely real the bracelet scene still does very much fit into that latter category. What's most important above all is that it was a particular moment that speaks to Neil Armstrong's character and the man he was, and Damien Chazelle feels that the scene did exactly that job. Said the director,

Going back to what I find sort of heartbreaking about him, that's sort of the closest he could ever come to maybe finding some sort of catharsis. But even when sitting there in front of the person who would understand his loss more than anyone, his wife, who shares the loss, he still would be, like in the last scene of the film, unable to actually talk about it.

How The Curse of La Llorona Is Connected To The Conjuring Universe

Very mild spoilers ahead from The Curse of La Llorona.

The Curse of La Llorona hasn't been heavily promoted as a Conjuring movie, but it is quietly haunting The Conjuring Universe as the sixth entry in the series. The horror film marks the directorial debut of Michael Chaves, whose follow-up film is The Conjuring 3, which comes out in 2020.

The Curse of La Llorona recently screened at South by Southwest, confirming how the movie connects to the Conjuring universe. The movie is set in Los Angeles in 1973, and has the connective tissue of Father Perez (Tony Amendola), who returns to the story from Annabelle. In this film, Father Perez talks to Anna Garcia (Linda Cardellini) about his evil doll case, and the doll is flashed on screen to further drive home the connection (per Bloody Disgusting).

The 2014 Annabelle movie was also set in Southern California, with the story in 1967. The Conjuring, which came out in 2013, was set in 1971. The Conjuring 2 was set in 1976 and 1977. So The Curse of La Llorona appears to fit into the timeline between between the first two Conjuring movies, just a few years after Father Perez's experience in Annabelle.

Since The Curse of La Llorona just screened, critics and fans have been sharing their early thoughts online. CinemaBlend's own Sean O'Connell felt the film compared poorly to previous Conjuring movies, although he had fond words for Linda Cardellini:

The Curse of La Llorona was produced by James Wan, who directed the first two Conjuring films before passing the reins to Michael Chaves for the upcoming third movie. This is the sixth film in The Conjuring Universe after The Conjuring, Annabelle, The Conjuring 2, Annabelle: Creation, and The Nun. It precedes Annabelle 3, aka Annabelle Comes Home, which just announced its title and June 28, 2019 release date. The Conjuring 3 is reportedly scheduled for September 11, 2020. The Crooked Man should be following them at some point, but there's no set date right now.

The Curse of La Llorona opens in theaters on April 19, yep one week before Avengers: Endgame. Pray for it. The horror movie is just one of the many films releasing in theaters in 2019.

Steven Caple Jr. took over directing duties from Ryan Coogler for Creed II -- the sequel to the very successful Creed -- but it took some persuading for him to take the job. The first movie made a healthy $173.5 million worldwide, with rave reviews. So expectations for the sequel were high to begin with. On top of that, the sequel would have to be finished in just under a year, which initially made Caple hesitate before accepting the job.

I was excited, but at the same time, I'm like, 'Man, this is a franchise that's good. I don't want to hurt it. I don't want to risk it due to the short time window we had to shoot. And I don't know whether or not they're gonna allow me to be me. I really want my voice to come off.'

In an interview with Vulture, Steven Caple Jr. described how he began his journey directing Creed II, and how he was reluctant to take the job at first. Caple first learned that he was in the running for Creed II around Thanksgiving of last year. At the time, he had only directed one feature -- the indie skateboard drama The Land -- but he went to USC's School of Cinematic Arts with Ryan Coogler, who recommended him as director. If Caple accepted the gig, he would have to enter production almost immediately and deliver the movie in under a year.

That's high-turnover in the film world, so Steven Caple Jr. did have a concern over whether he had enough time to deliver a quality film. He was also nervous about taking over the franchise and not being able to put his stamp on it. However, Ryan Coogler and co-writer/co-star Sylvester Stallone assured him that he would have room to make the film his own.

Ryan understood that. He didn't want me to make Creed all over again. He said, 'You definitely have to do you in order for us to win.' That was the same attitude Sly had. He was like, 'Hey man, for this movie to do well, it has to have your stamp on it.' That made me feel comfortable. Before Thanksgiving last year, I had these meetings on a Tuesday and a Wednesday. Then the city shut down. And Thursday, Friday, Saturday, I was just with my family really contemplating whether or not I was gonna take this project or not.

Obviously, Steven Caple Jr. decided to join the film, and so far it seems to have worked out well for the director! Early reviews for the film have been positive, and the movie seems to appeal to fans of Creed and the older Rocky fans, due to the connection to Rocky IV.
