Disney Is Working On A Live-Action Hunchback Of Notre Dame Movie

As we've seen over the last several years, Disney has made a regular habit of delving into its extensive catalog of animated movies and selecting various stories to be remade/re-imagined in live action, whether it's for a traditional theatrical setting or the upcoming Disney+ streaming service. The latest Disney movie to earn such treatment in 1996's The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and just like that animated movie and the stage production that followed, it will be a musical.

According to Deadline, Disney has tapped David Henry Hwang, the Tony-winning playwright of M. Butterfly, to write the live action Hunchback of Notre Dame movie, which is simply being called Hunchback. Longtime Disney composers Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz, both of whom worked on Disney's original Hunchback of Notre Dame, will compose the music for this adaptation. Josh Gad is also producing Hunchback alongside Mandeville Films, and while there's also talk of Gad possibly playing the lead role, casting hasn't been nailed down yet.

Adapted from Victor Hugo's same-named novel published in 1833, Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame was among the successful movies that made up the Disney Renaissance era. Released on June 21, 1996, The Hunchback of Notre Dame was met with numerous positive reviews and made over $325 million worldwide. This version of the followed Quasimodo, the hunchbacked bell-ringer of Notre Dame, wanting to find acceptance in 1482 French society and falling in love with the enchanting Esmeralda. As Disney is wont to do, it took plenty of creative liberties, such as having Quasimodo interact with a trio of sentient stone gargoyles. It was followed by a direct-to-video sequel, The Hunchback of Notre Dame II, in 2002.

Disney's live action Hunchback of Notre Dame movie will pull from its animated predecessor and the Victor Hugo novel, but not the stage production that played in Europe. Beyond that, we'll have to wait and see how this live action adaptation will be a straightforward remake, like 2017's Beauty and the Beast, or if it will deviate from the previous story significantly, like 2014's Maleficent. It should be noted that the animated Hunchback of Notre Dame is a particularly dark movie by Disney standards, so if David Henry Hwang wanted to, he could easily make the live action version a PG-13 affair. Of course, that would in turn result in fewer kids getting to see it in theaters, so Disney will surely want to stay in PG territory.

Whether or not Josh Gad ends up playing Quasimodo, this marks yet another Disney contribution on his resume. In the last decade, he's voiced Olaf in the Frozen franchise, played LeFou in Beauty and the Beast and will appear as Mulch Diggums later this year in Artemis Fowl. As for when we can expect Hunchback, it's not being fast-tracked, but with all this talent attached, one would imagine is stands a likelier chance of actually being made than not.

When you think of the movie musical, you think of fun song and dance numbers that, traditionally, are part of a grand, larger than life story. However, the tone of a musical is usually such that things never get too serious or too deep. However, it seems that the forthcoming musical about the life of Elton John, Rocketman, is going all in, as star Taron Egerton has revealed that the film includes an apparently quite physical gay sex scene with Richard Madden, and even deals with the singer's time spent in rehab. I probably shouldn't be telling you this but we have a sex scene. We went to some places together and got quite physical. I've watched it back and I think it looks great. The grown-up nature of the film, combined with it being a musical, makes it feel quite zeitgeisty. I don't know if I'm allowed to say this but it's basically about Elton in rehab, so we're not watering anything down.

Richard Madden plays the role of John Reid in Rocketman, who became Elton John's manager as well as lover. It seems that when it came time for the two to film a sex scene together, both of the actors decided to give it their all. While Egerton doesn't really go into detail about what that means, it sounds like we could be in for quite a passionate love scene.

However, what's probably more interesting about Taron Egerton's comments to The List is his revealing that the movie is about Elton John in rehab. The first trailer for the film does show Elton John getting indulgent, and one shot where he's receiving medical attention of some kind. It sounds like the rehab aspect might be a framing device for the film, a place for Elton John to look back on his life and career, which might also explain why the story gets a little fantastic when it comes to the more traditional movie musical elements. It's all happening in Elton's head.

Telling stories about a person's real life in film is always tough because no life is without its darker elements and while you want to tell a story that is true, a filmmaker also wants to tell one that is entertaining for the audience in someway. That need for entertainment is all the more true when you're making a musical, so Rocketman could be forgiven if it glossed over some elments of Elton John's life, especially since the movie isn't designed to be a realistic biopic, the tagline for the film is that it is based on a "real fantasy.". However, it seems that, at least in some cases, the movie decided to be more serious and, as Taron Egerton says, "adult."

It certainly appears that Rocketman will be tacking a more serious an honest approach to the material than something like The Greatest Showman. While that one was a fun musical, it couldn't exactly be said to not be watering anything down. Rocketman will be in theaters in May.

Force Ghosts are a key part of the Jedi mythology. After a Jedi masters a certain technique, when they die, they retain their individuality and are capable of manifesting in the physical world as a spirit, rather than just becoming one with the Force. It's something fans have seen many times, most prominently from Yoda and Obi-Wan Kenobi in the original trilogy. While Force Ghosts are mostly harmless, Mark Hamill is suggesting that they should live up to the fact that they are ghosts, and have an edge of horror to them.

You know what I'd love to see? A Force Ghost that's, like, actually frightening. Not somebody that's beatifically smiling down from the clouds or coming to give exposition -- you know, a ghost is scary! But we'll see. My work here is done.

When a Force Ghost arrives on the scene, it's typically a good thing. Not only is it a friendly face essentially back from the dead to give some advice, but it's also the return of a beloved character, like Yoda in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. But what if they were also scary as hell? That idea comes from Mark Hamill, who thinks it'd be interesting to see ForceGghosts as if they were actual ghosts: haunting figures with elements of horror.

While talking with IGN, Mark Hamill was asked what he would like to see from the franchise, now that it's able to branch out thanks to the Star Wars Story series. The actor answered that it'd be interesting to see scary Force ghosts, rather than see the same old benevolent exposition dumps. A horror-tinged Star Wars film is absolutely a cool idea that no doubt lots of fans would pay to see, given just how popular horror films have become at the box office in recent years. Evil Force ghosts are probably not the way to g, but there are plenty of other avenues for Star Wars horror.

While on the subject of Force ghosts, Mark Hamill revealed he has no idea if he is coming back as one in Star Wars: Episode IX. Luke Skywalker as Force Ghost is a popular fan theory, but only time will tell if Luke does make his big return. Hamill didn't want Luke to die in The Last Jedi originally, so hopefully he gets a chance to reprise his iconic role one more time.
