How Much Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom Could Make When It Opens Early Internationally
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom doesn't hit theaters in the U.S. for another couple of weeks, but internationally, the movie is roaring into theaters way earlier. In the hopes it will avoid having to compete with the FIFA World Cup, the Universal movie is scheduled to hit theaters on June 6, 2018 in 47 International markets, which means it will be making money internationally before its first domestic totals roll in. That's bad for spoilers, but early estimates indicate Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom will do well overseas and is expected to make $135 million internationally on opening weekend.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is a sequel that is expected to be a part of a trilogy and should be a big release for Universal this summer. That said, the movie isn't expected to reach quite the same tier as the original Jurassic World, which was one of the biggest box office wins of all time, raking in $1.67 billion worldwide. Still, if the movie makes a billion dollars worldwide, it should be a win for the studio. And the movie will start raking in money with early release throughout Europe, as well as places like Korea and the Philippines.
Early estimates have already been out regarding how much Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom could make opening weekend in North America. Tracking estimates indicate it could make between $140-$150 million domestically during opening weekend, which is similar to what the flick's international opening could bring in. Of course, by the time Fallen Kingdom opens on June 22 in the U.S., the movie will already have been out for more than a couple of weeks in International territories. In China, the movie is expected to open on June 15, hopefully to a behemoth audience. (The original made $228 million in that country alone.)
It's not that uncommon for movies to open on different dates in some international territories, but there is a fairly large gap between when people in Europe and when people in the U.S. will get the movie this time around. Per The Wrap, the decision was made to release early in 47 territories in order to give people ample time to see the movie before the World Cup begins on June 14. This is less of an issue in the United States, as football is still the country's favorite sport, followed by basketball, baseball and then soccer.
We'll have to wait and see exactly how Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom fares compared to its predecessor, but if the estimates stand, the movie should certainly make money this summer.
