6 Amazing Reveals In The Full Spider-Man: Far From Home Trailer
Spider-Man fans have been eagerly anticipating the arrival of the first full trailer for Spider-Man: Far From Home. It finally dropped this morning (click here if you haven't yet seen it), and it revealed a LOT about what we can expect from the sequel. In fact, there was an international version that included some more footage of Peter being Peter. It's sweet, and charming.
Unfortunately, there are no real answers in here about how Spidey returns from the snap -- that will be saved for Avengers: Endgame. But here are the most interesting and shocking things that we spotted while combing over all of the footage. Some of them actually feed into the mystery that this movie MIGHT take place before Endgame. Or that Endgame will somehow reset the MCU timeline so that the threat of Thanos (Josh Brolin) never happened? Why don't we start there, with a key line of dialogue from a guest star:
Nick Fury and Spider-Man haven't metNick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) will appear in Spider-Man: Far From Home, and will recruit the webslinger to help him battle creatures known as Elementals. They will pull their powers from different elements, and we see one made of water (Hydro-Man) and dirt (Sandman). We even get a shot in the new trailer of Fury and Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) battling one of the Elementals. But when Fury first approaches Peter, who is on vacation, he states, "So nice to finally meet you, Spider-Man." So, these two never meet in Avengers: Endgame? Or, will Endgame reset things so that the MCU people don't remember events of the past? MYSTERY! My bet is on the latter, with Endgame somehow resetting the MCU. What do you guys say?
We're getting the fishbowl!Fans have been waiting to see Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) in action, after getting an early tease look at his suit. More importantly, we all needed visual confirmation of the fact that Mysterio will rock his signature fishbowl helmet -- because really, without it, it's just not Mysterio. Though Gyllenhaal shows his real face when the character first shows up, once he battles the water Elemental, the fishbowl is in place. This HAD to happen, and it's encouraging that the full Mysterio costume is on display in this initial trailer.
Spider-Man is getting a new suitAgain, there have been images of Spider-Man (Tom Holland) wearing an all-black suit... but not THE black suit, that's made up of alien materials. For now, that's reserved for the Venom side of the Sony Spider-Man universe. Instead, Peter will get a suit known as the Stealth Suit, and it allegedly will be given to Spidey by Nick Fury so that he can continue to fight crime while in Europe, without tipping off his friends to the fact that Spider-Man and Peter Parker happen to be in Europe at the same time. What types of powers will the Stealth Suit have? It's unclear at the moment, though we do see that the eye lids can raise and lower, so that's pretty neat.
Two new suits, actually!The trailer suggests that some major action will happen in London, with the infamous Tower Bridge serving as a backdrop for a creepy, atmospheric battle. Could this be yet another Elemental creature bearing down on the metropolitan city? As Spider-Man swings into action, we see that he is wearing the red-and-black number that Tom Holland debuted on the Jimmy Kimmel show. It's not the Stark suit, or the Stealth Suit. So, who gives him this one? Our best guess is that Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau) provides this new suit to Spider-Man, probably because he leaves his Stark Suit in New York, and needs something stronger than the Stealth Suit to enter the battle with the final Big Bad. Just a guess, though.
A Ben Parker nodThis one is just sentimental, for long-time Spider-Man fans. Because the MCU Spider-Man already has his powers by the time we met him in Captain America: Civil War, we didn't have to endure his origin story one more time. I was able to ask Tom Holland, in an interview, if his version of Peter Parker is responsible for Uncle Ben's death, and he told me that he did not know. There was a brief mention of Ben in Homecoming, and now it looks like Peter is using Ben Parker's luggage as he packs for his European vacation. This is integral to the character of Peter. He mainly perseveres as a superhero because he failed his uncle, once. And he doesn't' want to do it again. I like that Jon Watts is not forgetting Ben Parker. We certainly haven't.
Spider-Man's 'neighborhood' now includes ManhattanThis one is a jolt for me. In Spider-Man: Homecoming, Peter Parker (Tom Holland) was limited to Queens. He was a friendly, neighborhood Spider-Man. And he looked longingly at the massive borough I the distance. To fans, though, Spider-man belongs in NYC, and so the brief moment where he battled in Manhattan in Avengers: Infinity War seemed like a major step. In this new trailer, we see Spidey swinging through New York City. It's brief, but at least we learn that he patrols Manhattan now. Wouldn't it be dope to see the Daily Bugle building in the background of one of these shots? Or, the Baxter Building?
What did you manage to see in the backgrounds of the trailer for Spider-Man: Far From Home? Let us know any of the cool things that we might have missed. For now, this is a very effective debut trailer. There's not a lot that it can show, seeing as how the character is still dust in the MCU. But I like that it establishes the fact that May (Marisa Tomei) and Peter (Tom Holland) are collaborating in his secret identity. And that Peter feels like he needs a break from his powers... though, as we know, Peter can never stop being Spider-Man.
In the meantime, the sequel Spider-Man: Far From Home gears up for a July 5 release date. We still can't wait to see what Joe and Anthony Russo have cooked up for the webslinger in Avengers: Endgame. But it's mildly comforting to see Peter back in human form, ready to engage in some fresh adventures with his friends, though on a different continent.
