Tim Allen Warned Tom Hanks About Toy Story 4's Emotional Ending

At this point, it is basically a given that Pixar movies are going to make you cry. The tear-jerking nature of these films is so well established that a box of tissues could replace Luxo Jr. as the companys mascot. This holds especially true for Pixars Toy Story franchise, and I think most of us expected this summers Toy Story 4 to continue this trend, but it may be even worse than we feared.

Toy Story 4s voice actors didnt record their dialogue together at the same time, so some actors got to the end before their co-stars. That resulted in Buzz Lightyear actor Tim Allen actually warning Tom Hanks about the films emotional ending, as the Woody actor explained:

This is the end of the series and I had gotten some texts from Tim Allen. These texts that say, Have you recorded yet? Have you been in? Have you had a session yet? I said, 'No, not yet. [Allen says] Wait until you see those last pages. Tough one, tough one.

That, folks, is not a good sign if you were hoping to leave the theater dry-eyed come this June. As Tom Hanks told Ellen on The Ellen Show, Tim Allen actually texted him to see if he had recorded yet, presumably to gauge his reaction. When he found out that he hadnt, he warned Tom Hanks about the scripts last pages, to help prepare his co-star for the films emotional ending.

The fact that the ending was so emotional that Tim Allen felt compelled to see what his co-star thought and then warned him about it means that it must be a doozy. I also like how Tim Allens warning of the ending amounts to Tough one. The terse response is fitting for the actor, and although I expect his diction wildly undersells it, this is probably Tim Allens way of saying that the ending is heart wrenching.

Tom Hanks went on to concur with Tim Allens sentiment once he reached those last pages. Those final recording sessions were particularly emotional, as the actor went on to say:

Were saying goodbye to Woody and Buzz and Bonnies room and Andy and everybody. It was emotional.

Come on, Tom, let us at least go into the theater without tears in our eyes. The way Tom Hanks describes the experience of finishing up the film definitely makes it seem like this could be the final Toy Story movie and the end of the series. That would mean saying goodbye to a series and characters that many of us grew up with and have known for over two decades.

We once thought that Toy Story 3 was the end, and as such that ending was like a punch to the face. If Toy Story 4 is indeed the end or at least feels like it, as it apparently did for Tom Hanks, I expect its ending to be just as brutal.

Of course, as I said, we once thought that Toy Story 3 was the end of the series, even if those at Pixar didnt. Weve heard that the ending of Toy Story 4 would be a satisfying conclusion if it is the final Toy Story film. And given that Toy Story 4 will be Pixars last sequel for a while, it could still feel like the end, even if we find out years from now that its not.

Warner Bros.' Wonder Woman obliterated the long-held misbelief that female-led hero films couldn't work, that they wouldn't make money and boys didn't want to see them. With that myopic notion now gone, there is a race among studios to capitalize on the market that drove Wonder Woman to such success. Millennium Films is aiming to enjoy that kind of success with its Red Sonja reboot. We heard a few weeks back that X-Men director Bryan Singer was being eyed to direct the pic, and it was said that Millennium would pay him top dollar for the project. Now we have an idea of just how much that is: a whopping $10 million.

As reported by THR, Bryan Singer is negotiating a fee of up to $10 million for the Millennium Films remake. This is a stunning figure and shows how serious Millennium is about the Red Sonja reboot and its desire for this film to launch its own superhero franchise. Clearly Millennium Films thinks that Bryan Singer is the right man to direct the story about the powerful female warrior and set this franchise off on the right foot so that it will pay dividends for the production company in the future. Of course, Bryan Singer is not unproven in this regard. The director of The Usual Suspects directed 2000's X-Men, which ushered in the comic book movie age and launched a series that is still going and has grossed billions at the box office.

Allegations of sexual misconduct have dogged Bryan Singer for years, but the recent #MeToo movement has seen him once again come under accusation. In December, Bryan Singer was sued for an alleged rape that allegedly took place in 2003, when the accuser was 17. The director has categorically denied the allegations. Given this controversy, it is somewhat surprising that Bryan Singer is still commanding such a fee. He probably wasn't very in demand, as many studios are extremely risk-averse to talent with baggage attached to them right now, and directors have lost jobs for mere tweets.

Those allegations aren't the only issues Bryan Singer has had of late either. The director was fired from the upcoming Queen film Bohemian Rhapsody after being absent from the set for what he said was a family health emergency. The film was almost finished, so he will still be credited as director, but you might think this could raise some red flags. Apparently not though, and Millennium Pictures is willing to take the chance on the director and hoping that the experience and talent Bryan Singer brings to the table will make the $10 million spent on his services look like a smart investment when Red Sonja hits theaters.

Regardless of who is behind the camera, a Red Sonja reboot seems like a smart idea. The character was originally part of the Marvel Comics Conan the Barbarian series before she got her own movie starring Brigitte Nielsen in 1985. The character has some name recognition and this is an opportunity to put a badass female warrior in a different setting than the traditional superhero films, spy movies or YA adaptations that we are used to seeing.

For the past three years, Disney has released a Star Wars movie in December, and made tons of money at the box office in the process. But 2018 is unique, as Lucasfilm is skipping a year before Episode IX arrives next December. This makes room for James Wan's Aquaman to strike while the iron is hot. There's just one problem: Mary Poppins Returns.

Aquaman will be competing with the Mary Poppins sequel this Holiday Season, with both highly anticipated projects expected to bring in a ton of money once they finally arrive in theaters. Aquaman director James Wan recently admitted he was nervous about this stiff competition, saying:

For sure, I think I'd be lying if I said I wasn't worried. But generally around the holidays, there's a lot to go around --- which was pointed out to us when Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle opened on top of each other. You see how well Jumanji played.

Well, thats a logical way of looking at it. Because while James Wan seems appropriately nervous about going up against a movie with such iconography and nostalgia as Mary Poppins Returns, he seems confident that cinephiles will be making their way to the movies more than once over the Holiday season.

Considering the excitement that has been building for both Aquaman and Mary Poppins Returns, James Wan's comments to EW make a great deal of sense. The two movies are drastically different in genre and tone, making plenty of room for each to bring in audiences. And the hardcore movie fans out there like yours truly will happily shell out the cash to see both projects on the big screen.

In his conversation with EW, James Wan specifically name drops Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle as a success story from an otherwise bloated December. Going up against a Star Wars movie seems like a fool's errand, considering the franchise's habit of breaking box office records and bringing generations of moviegoers to theaters.

But the Jumanji sequel was a critical and box office darling, and brought Sony the success it so sorely needed at the end of the calendar year. Another Jumanji is also being planned, with the talented cast likely returning to reprise their roles as video game avatars. If Aquaman and Mary Poppins Returns can share the box office draw as much as that movie and The Last Jedi, then perhaps both blockbusters will be a success this year.

Aquaman will arrive in theaters on December 21st, while Mary Poppins Returns will arrive just days before on December 19th. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your trips to the movies in the New Year.

The frustrations apparently continued from there and were still an issue during Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, as the Independent reprints part of a letter Rickman himself wrote which is critical of director David Yates for the way Rickman felt he neglected Snape's storyline as unimportant in order to focus on teen audience appeal.

These remarks come from a collection of Alan Rickman's letters which were being made public before going up for auction. While these might be just a couple of minor cases where Alan Rickman expressed frustration at playing Professor Snape, they show another side to a performance which is generally praised as one of the highlights of the franchise. There were few indications that Rickman had these feelings, so they may have been minor in the grand scheme of things. Clearly, the comments by producer David Heyman are referencing some specific feelings that Rickman had expressed to him at some point previously.

It's not clear exactly what caused the occasional frustration, and it obviously wasn't important enough to become a bigger issue, but it's interesting nonetheless. Alan Rickman's comments about David Yates could point to a conflict between Rickman as an actor and the more commercial aspects of the Harry Potter franchise as a whole. What Rickman was looking for as an actor to help him create the best possible performance is just one piece of a larger machine at the higher levels. Ultimately, the Harry Potter movies need to please a massive fan base so it wouldn't be surprising if Rickman, or some of the other actors, felt like they were getting lost in the shuffle.

Ultimately, Alan Rickman made all eight movies and the fans love the part that he did create. If nothing else, doing so allowed him to treat himself and his friends well, since the part made him a lot of money, and there's certainly something to be said for that.
