John Carpenter Is Scoring The Halloween Sequel, And All Is Right In The World

One of the key ways to make a successful sequel/reboot to a beloved franchise is to get as many people who were involved with the original attached to the new movie. We see this all the time on the TV side with reboots, as having the people who made the series so successful in the first place helps give the fans confidence in the new installment. The same is very much true for the new Halloween movie, which has series co-creator John Carpenter on board as an executive producer. Carpenter won't be directing, but he'll still have one other important job: composing the soundtrack.

In addition to being the director of a ton of cult classic films from the '80s and '90s, John Carpenter is also a composer, having created or co-created the score for many of his own films. That includes Halloween, which might have the most iconic soundtrack of any of Carpenter's films. Fans have been wondering if Carpenter would return to write some music for the new Halloween and Jason Blum himself teased months ago that he was trying to make it happen, but we now have a strong confirmation that Carpenter is scoring the horror flick.

This comes from Jason Blum himself, the mastermind producer behind some of the most successful horror films of the last few years and a huge part of Hollywood's current horror movie renaissance, so it might be as official a confirmation as there can be. Responding to a fan on Twitter, Blum simply wrote "Confirm!" in regards to whether John Carpenter would be composing the score for the latest Halloween movie.

This is definitely good news for the sequel, but I won't pretend like this movie needed an extra boost. I think it's fair to say that there's already a lot of good things going for Halloween. The writers and director have been saying all the right stuff, promising a sequel that is loyal to the original, ignores all the other bad sequels, and focuses on true scares over gore. According to Jaimie Lee Curtis, this thing is "full-tilt boogeyman," so a Carpenter score is just icing on the scary cake at this point.

As the weeks pass, the film world inches closer and closer to Awards Season, and the eventual evening of the Academy Awards. Plenty of Oscar-bait projects will be released in the lead up to that event, with the first of the season coming with A Star Is Born. Bradley Cooper's musical drama has captivated audiences with its intimate story and rocking soundtrack, and it's a project that means a lot to both Cooper and his co-star Lady Gaga.

In fact, Lady Gaga wasn't ready to say goodbye to Bradley Cooper's Jackson Maine when the project wrapped. After working so intimately with the project, it was hard for the pop star to say goodbye to Ally's ill-fated husband. As such, Gaga swiped some props from the set, including Jackson's shirt, which she intends to give to her children one day. As she tells it,

I just wanted to have a piece of him with me. This is very precious to me. These are heirlooms, or they will be heirlooms one day.

Well, that's certainly sweet. While she was obviously acting as Ally, it appears that the aspiring singer/songwriter left a special place in her heart. Jackson and Ally's love story is one that spans years and miles, so Gaga sometimes misses her onscreen husband.

In her same conversation with Variety, Lady Gaga also spoke to how emotional her first viewing of A Star Is Born was. And not because she was proud of herself or the movie that might garner her an Oscar nom, but because she missed Jackson Maine so much. It's hard for some actors to let go of their characters, and that appears to be the case with Gaga's first stint as a leading lady.

Lady Gaga's feelings toward Jackson and Ally appears to have paid off, as the pop star's performance has been critically acclaimed. She was able to strip down all the theatrics of Gaga to disappear into the character. Combine that performance with the work she did on the film's soundtrack, and it's clear that Gaga's entire heart and soul was put into A Star Is Born.

Oscar buzz has surrounded A Star Is Born since before it was released, and the film's strong box office performance and critical reception has only added fuel to the fire. But the Academy Awards don't arrive until February, so there will be plenty of new releases until then. Luckily, Bradley Cooper's directorial debut is staying at the forefront of pop culture through the various memes crafted from the movie. Additionally "Shallow" is a radio hit, which may help A Star Is Born stick with Oscar voters.

Is Kill Bill One Movie, Or Two?

How many films has Quentin Tarantino made? Your answer depends on your personal opinion of the director's sprawling revenge opera, Kill Bill. Is the Uma Thurman-led film Tarantino's fourth AND fifth film? Or just his fourth, forced to be split in two by producer Harvey Weinstein instead of subjecting QT to the demanded edits of "Harvey Scissorhands"?

This is a debate that erupted on the most recent episode of ReelBlend, a weekly podcast hosted by myself, Kevin McCarthy and Jake Hamilton. We were debating our favorite movie openings of all time, and swirled our conversation around Inglourious Basterds and Pulp Fiction. But when I said to my co-hosts that Kill Bill was two films -- and that Vol. 2 is significantly worse than Vol. 1 -- their heads exploded. They only see Kill Bill as one movie, because that's how Tarantino intended it to be shown. For real, listen to their heads explode in this week's episode:

So, we put it to a poll. And ReelBlend listeners largely agreed with me: It's two movies. One story, maybe. But definitely two movies.

So, what are the arguments? Those who stand by "Kill Bill is one movie" point to the fact that Tarantino filmed Kill Bill in one shot, and only relented to two Volumes after Harvey Weinstein started pushing for the removal of sequences that he considered vital to the movie's success. Knowing that he didn't want to cut huge chunks out of the overall story, the director allowed them to be split. In fact, Quentin Tarantino has a full cut of the Kill Bill saga, known as The Whole Bloody Affair, which was rumored to make it to DVD and Blu-ray... but hasn't yet. Tarantino screened The Whole Bloody Affair at his New Beverly theater in Los Angeles on the occasion of his birthday. So there's that.

Those who see Kill Bill as two movies point to the fact that Vol. 2 exists. Yes, Quentin Tarantino was pressured by Harvey Weinstein to cut the full movie in half, but the director agreed to do it. Plus, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 don't seamlessly merge together. Vol. 2 actually has its own opening credits, with a full sequence of Uma Thurman explaining everything that happened in the first movie. If Vol. 2 truly was a straight continuation of Vol. 1, these add-ons wouldn't be necessary. And if there was one long cut of Kill Bill, QT wouldn't put credits in the middle of his movie.

Ultimately, it doesn't change much. However you perceive Kill Bill doesn't alter the story. But we found it funny that different groups of Tarantino fans can have staunchly different takes on the perception of the director's film (or films). It is the second of two Kill Bill films produced simultaneously; the first, Kill Bill: Volume 1, was released in 2003. The films were originally set for a single release, but the film, with a runtime of over four hours, was divided in two.


Kill Bill was split into two movies against Tarantino's will. His vision has always been a single film. In splitting the movie, several significant changes/sacrifices had to be made, and personally I think the movie loses a lot from the split.

Which half of Kill Bill do you think is better? Volume 1 or 2? I have to go with Vol. 2. The characters are much more interesting in Vol. 2. Pai Mei, Estabon, Bud and Bill are better than about everyone in Vol. 1 IMO. Hanzo Hatori was cool, though. The Secret Life Of Pets 2: Animated Dogs And Cats Beat Out Dark Phoenix During Slow Weekend

We've been on a bit of a blockbuster high the last few weeks, particularly thanks to the insane performance by Joe and Anthony Russo's Avengers: Endgame - which is getting closer everyday towards becoming the biggest movie of all time. Unfortunately, though, that particular film fever is coming down now, and helped us once again acknowledge something we've now recognized for months: 2019 is really disappointing at the box office. This weekend is a perfect example, as what should have been an absolutely massive three days - featuring the launch of both a new X-Men movie and Illumination Entertainment title - we instead just got... blah.

The films released by Ilumination Entertainment have never really received the acclaim of either Pixar or Walt Disney Animation Studios titles, but what they have been known for is making crazy money at the box office. It started with the successful launch of the Despicable Me franchise back in 2010, and the train failed to slow down since, with their weakest performer to date being 2011's Hop, which still managed to make nine figures by the end of its theatrical run. This created a lot of expectations for The Secret Life Of Pets 2, but the finished product has underwhelmed in its launch.

The first movie in this series still remains the highest grossing Illumination Entertainment title domestically - having made $368.4 million in North America. But it doesn't look like The Secret Life Of Pets 2 is going to be able to come anywhere close to matching that success. Despite being released in 200 more theaters during its opening weekend, the sequel made less than half of what its predecessor did in July 2016. At that time it was a big surprise hit, crushing its direct competition and forcing Andrew Stanton's Finding Dory from the first place position it had owned in its first three weeks. Hell, the money made by the follow-up doesn't even equal what The Secret Life Of Pets made in its second week when it was going up again Paul Feig's Ghostbusters.

It was suggest by some prognosticators that The Secret Life Of Pets 2 could make north of $60 million, but it came up shockingly short. It may wind up getting some positive word of mouth from audiences, as it managed to get an "A-" CinemaScore grade, but still the future doesn't look incredibly bright for the animated would-be hit. There are some massive movies coming up in the next few weeks, with the greatest competition surely set to come from Josh Cooley's Toy Story 4 - which will likely be stealing a lot of Illumination's audience when their film goes out swinging for its third weekend.

Of course, as sour as that whole mess is, the situation for Dark Phoenix is far bleaker. This has been a film in trouble for quite a while now, as we have seen it go through many delays, and there has been a great deal of chatter about behind the scenes changes. As a result, expectations weren't too high for this release - despite it being the final chapter in the main X-Men series - but even still it managed to disappoint. This is the weakest opening ever for a film in the Marvel Mutant franchise... and not by a small amount, either. Previously it was James Mangold's The Wolverine that had the worst three day start, but even that film managed to make north of $50 million.

The situation is modestly similar to what happened to Josh Trank's Fantastic Four back in 2015 - also a much-delayed Fox Marvel movie that also happened to have a script written by Simon Kinberg. Opening in August, Fantastic Four made just $25.7 million in its opening frame - which isn't a great deal better than the $33 million showing by Dark Phoenix. International numbers should ultimately help, as the latest release has already made $107 million from overseas, but it's doubtful that it will be called anything close to a "massive success" by the time it exits theaters.

How could things get more depressing? Well, let's talk about Michael Dougherty's Godzilla: King Of The Monsters - which took the top spot last week with an underwhelming $49 million. This is another feature analysts were hoping would buoy the box office numbers of early 2019, but now it looks like that's definitely not going to happen. Not only did the film fall from first to fourth place, it also saw its numbers drop off a stunning 67.5 percent - which is really awful considering studios typically hope for a falloff of only 50 percent or so. Thanks to money from foreign territories it's going to be fine at the end of the day, as its global total is already nearing $300 million, so Warner Bros. doesn't have to sweat too much about Adam Wingard's upcoming Godzilla vs. Kong, which has already wrapped production in anticipation of being released next year.

To close out with a bit of a silver lining for these dark clouds, at the very least Guy Ritchie's Aladdin is doing some solid business - able to hold on to third place in its third week. Not only has it been doing better than Disney expectations, it's already made twice as much as Tim Burton's Dumbo made earlier this year (though its worth noting that the baby elephant movie is still playing in 112 theaters nationwide). Aladdin has surpassed $600 million at the international box office, and is now the fourth biggest release of 2019, behind only Avengers: Endgame, Captain Marvel, and the Chinese film The Wandering Earth.
